Biography

Senior Judge. Born in Kansas. Received Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Kansas, and Juris Doctor and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Chicago. Prior to appointment to the Court served as a Clerk to Judge Jerry E. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; practiced law with Baker & McKenzie and with Mayer Brown & Platt; and was the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Appellate and Review for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division. Appointed by President Bush as Judge of the United States Tax Court; sworn in on August 29, 2008 for a term ending August 28, 2023. Assumed senior status on August 29, 2023, and continues to perform judicial duties as Senior Judge on recall.
